5 Common House Renovation Mistakes to Avoid

May 8, 2023

Without strategic planning and preparation, home renovations can be extremely costly. Whether you’re renovating to increase your property’s value, make necessary structural modifications, or want to transform your home into a conducive haven, here are five common renovation mistakes you must avoid at all costs.

Not creating a budget

Budget blowouts are common for home renovations without an efficient budget. Regardless of whether you plan to use your savings or secure a loan, you must set a realistic budget that can cover the actual renovation costs and your daily expenditures.

If you intend to stay in your home during the renovation, consider its effect on your daily living. For instance, if you’re remodeling your bedroom, would you still be able to sleep comfortably at night, or would it be best to stay at an alternative accommodation for a few days? Set a figure you can realistically afford and ensure your budget has enough wiggle room to cover unforeseen charges.

Not setting renovation goals

Since home renovation can be overwhelming, setting goals before starting this endeavor is essential. Not having concrete objectives can significantly influence your renovation project’s timeline and budget. If your funds are limited, it would be best to take it one room at a time, as renovating everything at once can lead to costly mistakes, especially if you don’t have professional help. Setting achievable, relevant, and detailed remodeling goals early on prevents you from making mid-project changes, ensuring you stay on course.

Going overboard with do-it-yourself (DIY) projects

While some renovation projects can be done independently, resist the urge to do everything yourself. Some of these tasks include replacing outdated fixtures, painting the walls, rearranging the furniture, and repurposing old furniture. Avoid taking on projects that can significantly influence your home’s structure and those that can place you in danger. Leave high-risk jobs such as roofing and electrical to the professionals as they have the proper tools and training to complete these tasks.

Hiring an inexperienced and cheap contractor

Since home renovations can be expensive, many homeowners tend to choose contractors with the cheapest rates. While stretching your renovation budget is ideal, you should always choose quality work over price. Ask loved ones for recommendations, preferably those with experience working in your area. Interview at least three contractors and compare their portfolios. Request for client references and read reviews from third-party platforms. Your contractor can make or break your renovation project, so make sure to choose wisely.

Buying cheap and low-quality materials

While it can be tempting to purchase cheap materials to cut costs, doing so might prove inefficient and more costly in the long run. Buying low-quality items can compromise the durability of your house, which can cause serious safety concerns. Choose high-quality renovation materials made by reputable vendors such as Doors Plus. If your budget is tight, discuss with your contractor and be strategic when choosing economical alternatives.

Home renovation need not be stressful and unnecessarily expensive. Take note of these common mistakes, and don’t hesitate to ask for help.
